Over the years through recent times, primary education has played a big role in the educational system of the country. We believe that once a child finishes kindergarten (KG) and nursery, he or she moves down to the primary.
The primary section of the educational system is the part where a child receives intensive teachings which will be able to groom him/her for the secondary and tertiary level. The primary education is like a background which every child must pass through in order to move higher.
The primary education is called the foundation of the educational system, a child that did not pass through this process is termed as one that did not go to school, because that is where you will learn the basic things that will help such child further. The History Of Prinary Education In Nigeria
In the year 1995, the Unique Universal Primary Education was introduced in the country. The primary education was first established in the western region followed by the eastern region in 1956. During the year 1976; the Federal government took charge of the primary education system which means that every child has a right to education for a minimum of years before him/her can function fully well as a citizen of the country; basically means that the primary education duration of time is a minimum of six years.
After Nigeria gained independence in the year 1960; there was an uproar that the government should take over the educational system. The missionaries were not serving the nation as they wanted, they were not able to provide everything they need in running the system properly. This led to the takeover by the government in the year 1970 and 1971, the government was able to get full control over the primary educational system from the western and eastern region.
The burden of managing the Primary Educational sector was too much for the government although the oil sector was helping in terms of funding and this made the government expand activities in the primary education, but it was not enough just yet.
The government introduced the universal primary education in many states of the country, this led to the payment of fees in schools. In the year 1986; the government abolished the paying of fees in the primary school. In the year 1976, the management of primary education was taken over by the federal government while the funding and administration were transferred to the state and local government.
