Recent changes in educational policy in Rivers State; under which Port Harcourt falls are as follows:
Public Primary and Secondary Schools Are Now Free
Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State made the pronouncement recently, during a joint meeting with the Heads of Primary and Secondary Schools, Senior Secondary Schools Board and also the Universal Basic Education Board. The meeting was held at Government House, Port Harcourt.
With this pronouncement State-owned primary and secondary schools in Rivers State have been directed to stop the collection of tuition fees as well as levies from pupils and students, effective immediately.
The governor stated that the abolition of all forms of fees and levies in public primary and secondary schools across the state was intended to create access to quality education. For children from all financial and economic classes, in order to help them develop their potentials, and contribute their quota to the development of the state and the country at large.
Governor Nyesom Wike also stated that the state government would immediately start sending direct allocations to all government-owned primary and secondary schools in order to facilitate their management and operations.
In his own words: “From today henceforth, no child either in primary or secondary schools should pay fees and levies in any school across the state.
“The monies you collect from these children have just been used for your personal purposes.
“If I hear that any school head collects any fees or levies, even if for examinations like NECO or WAEC fees, that school head will face serious sanctions.
“We shall not stop at dismissal for the school head who collects fees or levies, we will prosecute the person involved.
“Government will work out grants that will be sent directly to the schools for their regular management and operations.’’
The governor also directed the Ministry of Education, the Senior Secondary Schools Board, and the Universal Basic Education Board to assist the government by monitoring all public schools across the state to ensure that they fully comply with the new directive.
The governor also used the opportunity to state that his administration has set aside funds to cover the salaries, allowances, examinations, and purchase of equipment for all public schools.
He further went on to assure all parents in the state that his administration was committed to the provision of quality education that is accessible to everyone including the less privileged in the state.
Hopefully, with this new development child education in Rivers State will reach new heights, and every child will become engaged with school, thus reducing the occurrences of restiveness among the youthful population in Rivers State. This will then result in a more peaceful state, where growth and development is the goal.
That’s all about the best secondary schools in Port Harcourt.
